Jakarta. Supporters of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) presidential candidate Joko Widodo and his running mate, Jusuf Kalla, on Monday evening launched a tabloid called Pelayanan Rakyat (People’s Servant), in the wake of mounting attacks, known locally as “black campaigns,” and false reporting targeting Joko, mostly on the part of tabloid Obor Rakyat (People’s Torch).
The group, who call themselves the People’s Movement Supporting Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla (Gardu), launched the 15-page publication at the Amanatul Ummah Islamic boarding school in Mojokerto, East Java, during Kalla’s visit to school.
The tabloid itself features a profile on Joko, articles on his achievements as well as articles arguing against the false reporting on Joko.
Kalla called Obor Rakyat’s content “libel.” The pamphlet included claims that Joko, a Javanese Muslim, was a Chinese Christian.
“Everything written there is defamation and we have reported it [to the police],” Kalla said, as quoted by Indonesian news portal Detik.com.
“Joko and I have never hit people, committed corruption and never violated human rights,” he said in a jab at Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) party presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, who has faced criticism for his alleged involvement in a human right abuse cases surrounding the fall of strongman President Suharto in 1997 and 1998.
