Jakarta. A Japanese fishing vessel with 18 Indonesian crew onboard sunk northwest of Australia on Sunday.
Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said the Shofuku Maru 78, a Japanese flagged vessel, caught fire before sinking earlier this morning.
However, the six Japanese crew, along with the 18 Indonesians, survived the incident, the ministry said on its official Twitter account.
A Greek tanker is helping evacuate the crew, who are scheduled to arrive at Port Hedland in Western Australia later on Sunday.
Last month 21 Indonesians were crewing a Taiwanese flagged fishing vessel when it sank in the South Atlantic Ocean. The group are still missing.
