Two Men Could Face Death for Ecstasy Dealing in Central Jakarta Establishment

Jakarta. Two men charged with distributing ecstasy at a Jakarta nightclub have been told they may face the death penalty, Indonesian media reported on Friday.
Jhonny Vevianto, who also goes by Amor, and Noverdy Prasadja were arrested while allegedly attempting to shift 2,400 ecstasy pills to V2, a nightclub on Jalan Gajah Mada in Central Jakarta.
“The defendant, Amor, was planning to sell 2,400 pills of ecstasy and charge Rp 450,000 [$38] a pill, while Verdy, who had only been working with Amor for a month, was helping to distribute the drugs,” public prosecutor Priatmaji was quoted as saying by Detik.com to the court.
Priatmaji charged the defendants with Article 114 of the 2009 Narcotics Law, which does allow for the death penalty although its imposition for a case of domestic drug dealing would be rare. Capital punishment for drug smuggling into Indonesian is a more frequent sentence.
Priatmaji told the court that two more suspects, identified as Topan and Galih, were still at large.
Last month, the Jakarta administration announced a plan to permanently shut down Jakarta’s most notorious nightclub Stadium after a young police officer died from drug use in the club.
Acting Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama called the club “outrageous” in the wake of the death of North Sulawesi police officer Jicky Vay Gumerung, 22, after he allegedly took ecstasy and methamphetamine.
