Jakarta. The commander of Indonesia’s armed forces has reiterated the importance of military neutrality ahead of the July 9 presidential election.
“People should not doubt our neutrality,” Gen. Moeldoko, the commander-in-chief of the Indonesian Military (TNI), said on Friday. “All soldiers are ready to help the police to secure the election.”
Moeldoko said he had issued instructions to all local military chiefs to secure the election and emphasized that the entire armed forces reported to him.
“There is only one command,” he said. “It is from the TNI commander-in-chief — it will be solid no matter what happens.”
The TNI has been on the receiving end of increased scrutiny following reports that two soldiers attempted to intimidate residents of a Jakarta ward to vote for presidential hopeful and former general Prabowo Subianto.
Moeldoko said the case has been closed and the soldiers had been sanctioned accordingly.
Cpl. Rusfandi, a member of the military command in the subdistrict of Gambir, Central Jakarta, was proven guilty of a disciplinary violation and was sentenced to 21 days in detention and subjected to a three-year delay in a scheduled promotion.
Rusfandi’s immediate supervisor, Capt. Saliman, was censured and given a six-month delay in promotion.
Rusfandi is alleged to have canvassed homes in the largely ethnic Chinese ward Cideng, collecting data on residents and encouraging them to vote for Prabowo.
