Malang, East Java. Tosan, an anti-illegal sand mine activist, has been prohibited from returning to his home in Selok Awar Awar Village, Lumajang, East Java, by the Witness and Victim Protection Agency who fear he may be targeted for further violence, just weeks after he was attacked.

The agency, known as LPSK, fears for Tosan's safety because of his involvement in protests against the sand mines in the area. Fellow protester Salim, also known as Kancil, was killed in the attack on Sept. 26 by pro-mine village officials and other locals.

Tosan was injured during the incident and was hospitalized for a number of days at the Saiful Anwar Hospital in Malang, East Java. Although doctors had given permission for him to return home, the LPSK said it was still unsafe.

“If he were at home, it would be more difficult to ensure his safety because there would be many people, friends, relatives, visiting him and there might be a chance one of them would want to kill him. His safety is very important because he can provide crucial information for the investigators,” Lili Pintauli, deputy chief of the LPSK, said on Monday.

To ensure his safety the LPSK would coordinate with the East Java Police, Malang police, and Lumajang Police, Lili said. Once appropriate plans have been made Tosan will be allowed to return home.

Mining activities in Selok Awar Awar Village have caused damage to the farmers' crops since operations began in 2014, resulting in a growing protest movement led by the late Salim.
