Jakarta. The Jakarta Tourism Office will hold its fifth installation of the Jakarta Museum Day Festival this month as part of a string of events set to be held in commemoration of the city’s 487th anniversary, which falls on June 22.
The head of the Tourism Office’s attraction-management division Ida Zubaidahsaid said the festival would be held on June 7 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and that organizers were hoping the event would boost museum visits.
“It is the duty of the tourism office to promote museums as tourism destinations,” Ida said during a press conference at the City Hall on Wednesday. “Museums’ managements have seized this [momentum] as an opportunity to hold a joint festival. There are not that many Jakarta citizens who know about the city’s good museums.”
She added that Indonesians would often visit museums during their travel overseas, but tended to overlook the many museums located within the country, especially Jakarta.
The festival is set to take place in Fatahillah Square in the Kota Tua area of West Jakarta, where participating museums will be showcasing their collections, in addition to a series of other activities prepared by organizers.
“A number of activities will be held during the festival, such as a photography competition, coloring competition for elementary students, as well as a group competition that will push students to explore museums,” Ida said.
The city has allocated a budget of Rp 2 billion for the event, which is expected to attract between 5,000 to 10,000 visitors.
A total of 45 museums across the city will be participating in the Museum Day Festival, an event that has been held annually since 2010.
