Australian Hiker Dies During Rinjani Excursion

North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Police have reported that an Australian man collapsed and died on Monday during a hike on Mount Rinjani in Lombok, likely due to an asthma attack.
John Paul Arthur Lipscome, 53, was part of a group of 10 hikers from various countries who had just begun their hike when Lipscome keeled over at 10 a.m.
“They had only gone about two kilometers from the entrance to Mount Rinjani, in Senaru village, when the victim suddenly collapsed and died,” I Watan Wartia, a local police officer, told the Jakarta Globe. “The victim’s companions immediately contacted us, and we went straight to the location.”
Police took Lipscome’s body to the police hospital in Mataram, the provincial capital.
“We’re still waiting for the Australian Consulate in Bali to tell us whether we may perform and autopsy here or not,” said Wayan Redana, an official with the hospital. He added that from the symptoms described by witnesses, it appeared likely that Lipscome had suffered an asthma attack.
